Stocks rally despite terror attack on PSX building

Image
KARACHI: The early morning terrorist attack on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) in the country’s commercial hub could not unruffle investors who refused to be distracted by the gunfire outside. For a moment due to early commotion, some nervous participants started to sell-off and quit which pulled the index down to intraday low by 220 points. But those who maintained their sangfroid took it as an opportunity to buy blue chips at attractive levels. The market closed at its usual time with the KSE-100 index recording gains of 242 points (0.71 per cent) and settled at 34,181.80. The index took a turn to the north as the law enforcement agencies in collaboration with the PSX security guards quickly neutralised the last of the four gunmen who only managed to reach the compound. The benchmark hit the intraday high by 267 points. PSX Chairman Suleiman Mehdi, who coordinated in eliminating the attackers, expressed appreciation for the security agencies’ rapid response that foiled t

Imran hears out disgruntled lawmakers

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday continued his efforts to appease “disgruntled” ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) members of the National Assembly and assured them of fulfilment of their demands. The prime minister spent a busy day before the passage of the federal budget 2020-21 and met around 20 MNAs of the ruling party. Among such meetings, the significant was one in which 13 MNAs from Karachi called on the prime minister and expressed their reservations. Meanwhile, the prime minister cancelled the federal cabinet meeting which takes place on every Tuesday. The apparent reason behind the cancellation is said to be the session of the National Assembly on Tuesday in which supplementary demands for grants are likely to be passed. The lawmakers who met the prime minister on Monday were: Shaukat Ali, Nasir Khan, Amir Talal Gopal, Mian Mohammad Shafiq, Sardar Riaz Mehmood Khan Mazari, Saifur Rehman, Alamgir Khan, Aftab Hussain Siddiqui, Abdul Shakoor Shad, Fahi

NA passes budget as govt humbles opposition

• Bilawal asks PM to either apologise to nation or step down • Qureshi says Imran will not resign on anyone’s demand • Opposition faces 160-119 vote defeat on a clause of finance bill ISLAMABAD: Amidst reports of cracks within the ranks of the ruling alliance, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government on Monday managed to get the federal budget for the financial year 2020-21 passed from the National Assembly, comfortably outnumbering the opposition whose members delivered fiery speeches, but failed to make any difference. At the time of final vote on the finance bill, generally known as the federal budget, a triumphant Prime Minister Imran Khan was seen raising his hand in the air like he used to during his cricketing days and then receiving felicitations from the treasury members over his latest political victory. The treasury members raised full-throated slogans in favour of Imran Khan as soon as Speaker Asad Qaiser announced passage of the budget through a voice vote. The

China sent martial artists to India border before deadly clash

BEIJING: China reinforced its troops near the Indian border with mountain climbers and martial arts fighters shortly before a deadly clash this month, state media reported. Tensions are common between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in the mountainous border terrain, but this month’s fighting was their deadliest encounter in over 50 years. Five new militia divisions including former members of a Mount Everest Olympic torch relay team and fighters from a mixed martial arts club presented themselves for inspection at Lhasa on June 15, official military newspaper China National Defence News reported. State broadcaster CCTV showed footage of hundreds of new troops lining up in the Tibetan capital. Tibet commander Wang Haijiang said the Enbo Fight Club recruits would “greatly raise the organisation and mobilisation strength” of troops and their “rapid response and support ability,” China National Defense News reported, although he did not explicitly confirm their deployment was linke

SC to take up plea for urgent hearing of Pearl case today

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court will take up on Monday the Sindh government’s request for urgent hearing of its appeal against the overturning of Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh’s conviction for the killing of Wall Street Journal (WSJ) bureau chief Daniel Pearl. The apex court at the last hearing on June 1 had asked the Sindh government to furnish complete record comprising all evidence along with its appeal challenging the decision of the Sindh High Court in the Daniel Pearl case. Besides the Sindh government, the parents of the slain journalist, Ruth Pearl and Judea Pearl, had also moved appeals through senior counsel Faisal Siddiqui. A three-judge bench comprising Justice Mushir Alam, Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Yahya Afridi will consider the provincial government’s application in which it had requested the Supreme Court to consider hearing the challenge to the April 2 decision during or soon after the summer vacation, which usually end in the first week of October. Biden urges India to restore rights of Kashmiri people

WASHINGTON: Democratic presidential nominee and former US vice president Joe Biden wants India to restore the rights of people of occupied Kashmir and has expressed disappointment over recent constitutional amendments that specifically target Muslims. In a policy paper — “Agenda for Muslim American community” — posted recently on his campaign website, Mr Biden clubbed Kashmir and Assam in India with the forced detention of over a million Uyghur Muslims in western China, and discrimination and atrocities against Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority. “In Kashmir, the Indian government should take all necessary steps to restore rights for all the people of Kashmir. Restrictions on dissent, such as preventing peaceful protests or shutting or slowing down the Internet, weaken democracy,” says the paper while outlining the policies Mr Biden will pursue if elected president in November. “Joe Biden has been disappointed by the measures that the government of India has taken with the implemen

Trump denies knowing about Russia-Taliban nexus

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump denied on Sunday he had been briefed on intelligence that reportedly showed Russia had offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing US soldiers in Afghanistan. In a pair of early morning tweets , Trump angrily slammed the report by The New York Times as “Probably just another phony Times hit job, just like their failed Russia Hoax.” “Nobody briefed or told me, @VP Pence, or Chief of Staff @MarkMeadows about the so-called attacks on our troops in Afghanistan by Russians, as reported through an ‘anonymous source’ by the Fake News @nytimes,” he wrote. “Everybody is denying it & there have not been many attacks on us....” “Nobody’s been tougher on Russia than the Trump Administration.” Afghan Taliban, Moscow denounce report On Friday, The Times reported that US intelligence had concluded that a Russian military intelligence unit offered rewards to Taliban-linked militants to kill troops of the US-led coalition in Afghanist

Differences exist, but PML-Q will back govt in budget vote

LAHORE: Differences between the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and its ally, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), surfaced on Sunday as the Chaudhrys did not attend the dinner hosted by Prime Minister Imran Khan at his Banigala residence on Sunday to protest against the ‘cold attitude’ of PTI leadership towards its ally. However, the PML-Q has decided in principle to vote for the passage of the federal budget 2021-21. The decision to vote for the passage of the federal budget was taken at a PML-Q meeting, jointly presided over by Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Pervaiz Elahi at their Zahoor Elahi Road residence, on Sunday. The meeting discussed the ‘cold attitude’ of PM Khan towards the PML-Q. Q-League keeps away from dinner hosted by prime minister “The PML-Q leadership refused to attend the premier’s dinner as he did not bother to invite the party leadership directly. There is no point of meeting Mr Khan if he continues to distrust Chaudhrys and not take them onboard on i

Global coronavirus deaths top half a million

Image
SYDNEY/BEIJING: The death toll from COVID-19 reached half a million people on Sunday, a grim milestone for the global pandemic that seems to be resurgent in some countries even as other regions are still grappling with the first wave. The respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus has been particularly dangerous for the elderly, although other adults and children are also among the 500,000 fatalities and more than 10 million reported cases. While the overall rate of death has flattened in recent weeks, health experts have expressed concerns about record numbers of new cases in countries like the United States, India and Brazil, as well as new outbreaks in parts of Asia. More than 4,700 people are dying every 24 hours from COVID-19-linked illness, according to Reuters calculations based on an average from June 1 to 27. That equates to 196 people per hour, or one person every 18 seconds. About one-quarter of all the deaths so far have been in the United States, the Reuters d

Ogra finds fault with handling of oil crisis

ISLAMABAD: Amid controversies swirling around petroleum crisis and pricing, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has found fault with official handling of the demand and supply mechanism, leading to countrywide shortages, hoarding and black marketing of oil by market players. In a detailed report submitted to the federal cabinet, Ogra also challenged the position of the Ministry of Energy Petroleum Division (MEPD) that as the regulator it was responsible for ensuring 20-day stock at all times. The regulator quoted a series of rules and laws to claim that maintenance of stock and smooth supply throughout the country was the responsibility of the petroleum division and the director general oil under the MEPD. The regulator has also attached a number of its communications to the MEPD, warning and highlighting the build-up to the supply crisis and how chronologically the office of directorate general oil (DGOil) had been changing various decisions. The report also contains an upda

Macias’ niece, Danielle Lopez, told the foreign news outlet that her uncle began showing symptoms he thought were related to having diabetes last Monday but soon realized the situation was far more severe.
