Open hearing of PTI foreign funding case from Jan 4

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will take up for hearing the foreign funding case against the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Jan 4. The ECP has issued notices to PTI GM (Finance) Mohammad Arshad and the party’s s counsel Shah Khawar. Notices have also been issued to petitioner Akbar S. Babar and his counsel Ahmad Hassan Shah. A scrutiny committee of the ECP constituted in March 2019 to audit foreign funds of the PTI had finally submitted its report to the commission on Nov 26, about six months after the last deadline it was given. The PTI foreign funding case continues to linger since November 2014 when it was filed by Mr Babar, the party’s founding member. ECP sets March 27 for next phase of KP LG polls In his petition, Mr Babar alleged financial irregularities in the party’s accounts, including illegal sources of funding, concealment of bank accounts in the country and abroad, money laundering and use of private bank accounts of party employees a

FIA recovers Rs1.2bn from suspects of financial crimes this year

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has recovered Rs1.273 billion from 422 suspects in 335 cases of financial crimes during the current year in compliance with the action plan for the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Pakistan has been on the grey list of the FATF since 2018. The FATF had in its October 2021 meeting acknowledged “good progress” made by the country, but retained it on the grey list and called upon the government to exhibit terror financing investigations against and prosecution of top cadres of UN-designated terror groups. According to the FIA statistics, 95 cases of financial crimes were registered during December alone, including those against illegal currency dealers and persons involved in hawala/hundi (illegal money transfer business). As many as 127 suspects were arrested and Rs201 million and foreign currency equivalent to Rs89m were seized. On the references sent by the State of Pakistan, 32 cases were registered, as many persons arrested an

Covid-19 cases across world post record

SYDNEY: Global Covid-19 infections hit a record high over the past seven-day period, a tally showed on Wednesday, as the new Omicron variant raced out of control, keeping workers at home and overwhelming testing centres. Almost 900,000 cases were detected on average each day around the world between Dec 22 and Dec 28, with myriad countries posting new all-time highs over the past 24 hours, including the United States, Australia and many European nations. Almost two years after China first reported a cluster of “viral pneumonia” cases in the city of Wuhan, the regularly mutating coronavirus is still wreaking havoc, forcing numerous governments to rethink quarantine and test rules. Although studies have suggested the Omicron variant is less deadly than some of its predecessors, the huge numbers of people testing positive mean that hospitals in some countries might soon be overwhelmed, while businesses might struggle to carry on operating because of workers having to quarantine. Nawaz won’t return, he will be brought back: Fawad

• Says opposition incapable of toppling govt • Claims Rana Shamim’s affidavit issue shows how strong ‘Sicilian mafia’ is ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday said the government would bring back self-exiled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to the country as he would never return himself, insisting that the opposition was incapable of toppling the present setup led by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI). Speaking at a joint press conference with National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yusuf after a meeting of the federal cabinet, the minister said: “Nawaz Sharif will never return home voluntarily, rather the government will bring him back once the agreement with the UK government is finalised.” The recent statement of former National Assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq that he was going to London to bring Nawaz Sharif back had gotten the Sharif family in Jati Umra worried, Mr Chaudhry said, adding that the government had finalised matters with the United Kingdom regarding

Delay in Dhabeji industrial zone project irks CPEC Authority chief

ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on CPEC Affairs Khalid Mansoor has expressed displeasure over the delay in taking off of the ambitious Dhabeji industrial zone (DIZ) in Thatta and said that three other special economic zones (SEZs) that are part of the corridor project were near completion. Mr Mansoor, who is also the chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority, told Dawn on Sunday that a judgement reserved by the Sindh High Court (SHC) on a petition challenging the award of a contract for developing the DIZ had further caused the delay in initiating the project. The high court reserved its judgement on December 6 but has yet to announce it. According to a notification, the winter holidays of the high court started from Sunday and will continue until Jan 9. “It is believed that the judgement will be announced after winter vacations of the court,” a senior official of Sindh Economic Zones Management Company (SEZMC) said. Termination of service on verbal order illegal: SC

ISLAMABAD: No employer can terminate the services of its employees on mere verbal instructions without any written order containing explicit reasons or cause for termination, the Supreme Court has held. Authored by Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar, a verdict issued by the apex court emphasised that there was no provision under the Labour Laws or the Service Laws permitting the employer to terminate the services verbally without a written order containing “explicit reasons or cause of termination or for disciplinary proceedings on account of misconduct”. The judgement explained that a separate procedure had been laid down for proper termination of services, which accentuated the issuance of show-cause notice, holding of inquiry unless dispensed with by the competent authority considering all attending circumstances of the case that too after personal hearing. Justice Mazhar observed that termination of service by a verbal order was alien to labour and service laws and also against the pr

After Pfizer, Merck's at-home antiviral Covid-19 pill gets US authorisation

Image
The US on Thursday authorised Merck & Co's antiviral pill for Covid-19 for certain high-risk adult patients, a day after giving a broader go-ahead to a similar but more effective treatment from Pfizer Inc. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Merck's drug, which is designed to introduce errors into the genetic code of the virus, could be used when other authorised treatments are not accessible or clinically appropriate. The drug, molnupiravir, was developed with Ridgeback Biotherapeutics and shown to reduce hospitalisations and deaths by around 30 per cent in a clinical trial of high-risk individuals early in the course of the illness. The authorisation allows the use of the drug for mild-to-moderate Covid-19 and along with the Pfizer pill, it could be an important tool against the fast-spreading Omicron variant, which is now dominant in the US. Pfizer's drug, Paxlovid, was authorised on Wednesday for people aged 12 and older and has shown to be nearly 90

'Writing on the wall': Safdar claims Junaid to follow in family's footsteps and join politics

PML-N leader retired Captain Mohammad Safdar has said that his and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz's son, Junaid Safdar, will follow in the family's footsteps and become a politician. He made the remark while speaking to reporters outside the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday. When asked about the possibility of Junaid entering politics, he said: "This is the writing on the wall that he will go into politics. A lawyer's son becomes a lawyer, a doctor's son becomes a doctor, a pir's (spiritual leader) son becomes his successor and he (Junaid) is from a family of politicians." The PML-N leader added that Junaid, at the age of three, used to hug PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and cry while the latter was incarcerated in Attock Fort after his government was toppled in 1999. It was evident then that Junaid would "serve [the slogan of] 'vote to izzat do' (give respect to vote) and the Constitution of Pakistan", Safdar said. "That is wh

ANP mayoral candidate shot dead in KP's DI Khan ahead of LG polls

The Awami National Party's candidate contesting in the election for Dera Ismail Khan city's mayor was shot dead on Saturday, a day before polling for local government seats was scheduled to take place in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to police, unidentified attackers opened fire on Umar Khitab Sherani outside his residence in the limits of Model Town police station and fled. Sherani died on the spot. Confirming these details, Dera Ismail Khan District Police Officer Najamul Hasnain told the media that police had launched an investigation into the matter and started search operations to arrest Sherani's killers.
