100-year-old temple attacked in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: A group of unidentified people attacked an over 100-year-old Hindu temple at Purana Qila on Saturday, causing damage to its ongoing renovation work, stairs and doors. Earlier, the encroachment mafia had occupied the surroundings of the temple over a long time by making shops and kiosks. The district administration assisted by the police recently removed all encroachments. After the temple was cleared of encroachments, renovation work was started. The security officer of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), Northern Zone, Syed Raza Abbas Zaidi, lodged an FIR at Banni police station, saying that construction and renovation work on the temple had been going on for the last one month. He said there were some encroachments in front of the temple which were removed on March 24. However, religious rites have not been started in the temple nor were there any idol or any other worship item. The complainant said 10 to 15 people stormed the temple on Saturday at about 7.30pm

No meeting planned with Indian FM, says Qureshi

ISLAMABAD: The much-anticipated meeting of the foreign ministers of Pakistan and India in Dushanbe (Tajikistan) on the sidelines of a ministerial conference of the Heart of Asia — Istanbul Process, which gets under way on Monday (today) — has not been scheduled so far. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who will depart on Monday (today), for participation in the conference, told Dawn on Sunday that “no meeting has been finalised or requested”. Meanwhile, the Foreign Office in a curtain raiser on the conference said that Mr Qureshi would hold “consultations with key regional and international partners” on the sidelines of the conference, an important platform for regional cooperation on Afghanistan. Mr Qureshi and his Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar’s participation in the same multilateral event led to speculations that they might meet each other especially in the backdrop of recent developments in the frayed relations between the two countries. The last meeting between Mr Qu

2,094 ghost employees working in USC: report

ISLAMABAD: An audit of the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) for the year 2019-2020 has revealed that 9,756 employees are working in the organisation’s 42 regions against the sanctioned or authorised strength of 7,662. The auditors recommended an independent inquiry into the matter to fix responsibility. According to the audit report, 2,094 extra employees are an extra burden on the already cash-strapped organisation and that the USC did not share details of excess employees with the auditors. The possibility of ghost employees in the appointments, therefore, could not be ignored, the report noted, adding that the USC extended undue favour to irregular employees at the cost of exchequer which also indicated weak internal control. “The payment of salary to these un-authorised employees for the last several years showed that there was no financial discipline/control in USC budgetary matters and the budget under the head of salary and wages was not being allocated to zonal/regional

PPP defends its plan for ousting Buzdar

LAHORE: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has defended its plans for bringing about a change in Punjab through a no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, arguing the province is the soft belly of Imran-led government. “If the Punjab government is ousted somehow, Imran Khan’s [federal] government can no longer sustain its hold on the country,” PPP’s Punjab chapter general secretary Chaudhry Manzoor told a news conference on Sunday. The PPP plan was revealed on Saturday by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz, who said Asif Ali Zardari had offered a deal to the PML-N in a meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), purportedly backed by the establishment, about regime change in Punjab. Flanked by Aslam Gill, Dr Khayyam and Altaf Qureshi, Chaudhry Manzoor criticised the PML-N for preferring to retain the Buzdar government. Manzoor says move will weaken govt “The PPP with only seven members [in a 371-strong house of Punjab Assembly]

SNGPL, SSGC told to address LNG operators’ concerns

ISLAMABAD: The Prime Minister Office has directed the two gas utilities to immediately engage with two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) operators who have complained about roadblocks and apathetic responses to setting up of their terminals. Informed sources said the sponsors of two coming LNG Terminals — Tabeer Energy and Energas — had in recent weeks reached out to all key stakeholders, including the prime minister, to report difficulties they were facing in bringing their investments to fruition. In these engagements, the sponsors appreciated maximum support extended by the relevant government forums, like the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) and the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet in taking policy decisions. At the same time, however, they complained that there were some entrenched quarters within the line ministries, regulatory agencies and companies concerned who were creating problems, instead of implementing decisions of the CCoE and the ECC duly endorsed

Imran asks SBP, NBP to soften housing loan terms

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) to soften terms of housing loan so that people can get maximum benefit of the government’s flagship Naya Pakistan Housing Programme (NPHP) to build their houses. “I instruct Governor State Bank Reza Baqir and President National Bank Arif Usmani… that banks provide ease to the house loan seekers,” the prime minister said while virtually attending the NAB’s telethon on low cost housing loan on Sunday. The PM is under home quarantine after being tested positive for Covid-19 on March 21. Mr Khan vowed that the government would give preference to widows and differently-abled persons while implementing the housing programme. Several callers during the telethon complained about lengthy and complicated process of applying and obtaining house loans under the government’s mortgage financing scheme. Several callers complain about complicated process to obtain facility Duri
