President, PM pay rich tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain

Image
ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan in their messages on the occasion of Youm-e-Ashur paid a rich tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions, saying their sacrifice is a guiding principle for the Muslims. President Alvi said the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) was in fact the victory of truth and a symbol of steadfastness against oppression and a glorious example of sacrifice. The sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain gave Muslims a lesson that one should not evade even sacrificing his life while fighting against the evil forces, he underlined. He called on the countrymen to make a pledge to take every step for the victory of truth, promotion of justice, adherence to Islamic values, and for national progress and prosperity. Prime Minister Khan said the historic battle of Karbala fought between truth and falsehood has made it clear that the real success and steadfastness is the passion to sacrifice e

Justice Isa’s wife seeks income tax details of PM, others

ISLAMABAD: Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s wife, Sarina Isa, on Saturday alleged that since her confidential and legally-protected income tax and bank records were illegally accessed , she also wanted similar information about those who were provided her details. In a statement, Ms Isa stated that she wanted information about the people who accessed or were provided her confidential information and documents, especially Prime Minister Imran Khan, Law Minister Dr Farogh Nasim, Asset Recovery Unit Chairman Mirza Shahzad Akbar, Dr Mohammad Ashfaq Ahmed and complainant Abdul Waheed Dogar. “They should not object because they have held or hold public office, while one of them, who is a government servant, complains that my family and I are not tax compliant,” she alleged in the statement. The statement is annexed with her Aug 28 reply to the notices issued by commissioner (IR) FBR on Aug 21 under Section 122(9) and Section 111(1)(b) of the Income Tax Ordinance (ITO) 2001. It stated that she was

Shujaat asks PM to visit crisis-hit Karachi

LAHORE: President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Chaudhry Shujaat Husain has asked Prime Minister Imran Khan to visit Karachi to revolve its problems. “PM Khan should visit Karachi for a week and issue orders for resolution of its problems. He must ensure that his orders are implemented,” he said on Saturday while showing concern over the condition of Karachi after devastating rains. “Karachi always became a victim of political statement mongering. All major political parties have been in power in Karachi. There remained the governor’s rule also, mayors and administrators were also posted but regretfully nothing was done for the good of people of Karachi except hurling accusation at one another,” he regretted. Chaudhry Shujaat said the clean water issue was significant among other problems of Karachi. Attention should be paid to the problem of cleanliness as the most people showed ‘haath ki safai’ rather than work on cleanliness of Karachi. “Here power means only money.

Officials involved in fraud must face dismissal: SC

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has held that doling out public property or funds by officials to private persons or even to themselves amounts to fraud and those committing fraud or embezzlement of government property or money can’t be treated leniently in disciplinary proceedings or be allowed to continue in service. Thus, maximum penalty like dismissal from service should be imposed on the government employees involved in embezzling state lands rather than forfeiture of certain service years, explained a five-page order authored by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed. A two-judge SC bench that also comprised Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan passed the order on an appeal against the March 3, 2017 decision of the Service Tribunal, Lahore. The appeal was moved by the commissioner of Faisalabad division against one Allah Bakhsh. “Where the respondent himself has admitted the commission of the offence that he transferred the government land measuring 270 kanals, situated in Chak No. 492/ JB, District Jhang,

Riot in Sweden after anti-Muslim leader banned from rally

STOCKHOLM: At least 10 people were arrested, and several police officers injured, in violence which broke out in southern Sweden after an anti-Muslim Danish politician was blocked from attending an extremely offensive rally, police said on Saturday. Protesters threw stones at police and burned tyres on the streets of Malmo late on Friday, with the violence escalating as the evening wore on, according to police and local media. The demonstration of about 300 people was connected to an incident earlier in the day in which protesters burned a copy of the Islamic holy book, police spokesman Rickard Lundqvist told Swedish tabloid Expressen . Between 10 and 20 protesters were arrested late on Friday and “have all been released”, police spokesman Patric Fors said. Several police were slightly injured, he added. The violence had subsided by Saturday morning. “Those who act like this have nothing to do with Islam,” Samir Muric, an imam, said on Facebook. “It’s not right,” Malmo resident S

Parties seek written deal before opposition conference

ISLAMABAD: Angry with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) over their recent act of supporting the government in the parliament during the passage of the FATF-related legislation, a number of smaller opposition parties now want the country’s two major parties to sign a Charter of Democracy (CoD)-like document or an agreement to formalise the opposition’s alliance before convening an already-delayed Multi-Party Conference (MPC). This demand from the smaller parties, including the nationalist parties from Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, came during a meeting of nine opposition parties — other than the PPP and the PML-N — at the residence of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad late on Thursday night, Dawn learnt from sources here on Saturday. The final decision in this regard, however, has been left with the Rehbar Committee, which is expected to meet next week under its convener Akram Durrani. The sources

FO assails ban on Muharram activities in held Kashmir

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has condemned extrajudicial killing of Kashmiris in fake encounters and imposition of restrictions on religious gatherings and processions in occupied Kashmir. “Pakistan strongly condemns extrajudicial killing of four more Kashmiris in staged encounter in Shopian region of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Equally condemnable are the restrictions imposed on religious processions and gatherings during Muharram,” a statement issued by the Foreign Office (FO) said. Nearly 300 innocent Kashmiris, including women and children, have been martyred by the Indian occupation forces in fake encounters, so-called “cordon and search” operations, and other instances of use of brutal force including pellet guns over the past one year. “India’s inhuman methods to subjugate the Kashmiri people through killings, torture, forced disappearances and incarcerations have failed in the past and will not succeed in the future. Bilawal asks ministers to stay on roads till water is drained out

KARACHI: Facing criticism over the recent performance of his party’s Sindh government, Pakistan People’s Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Saturday asked the provincial ministers to stay on the roads till the last drop of rainwater was drained out from every city, town and village of the province. The PPP chairman defended the Sindh government’s performance and blamed the record-breaking spells of monsoon rains, as the reason behind the crisis. In a separate message, he urged the people facing tyranny and falsehood to “follow in the footsteps of Imam Hussain by resisting tyranny, falsehood and oppression”. A statement issued by Bilawal House said that the PPP chairman, while speaking to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Minister for Local Government Nasir Hussain Shah and Minister for Public Health Engineering Mir Shabbir Ali Bijarani over the phone, praised the provincial cabinet members for working on the ground through better coordination.
