Iran hangs ethnic Baluch over terrorism charges

TEHRAN: Iran hanged a man for murder, abduction and “terrorist” links on Saturday, website of the country’s judiciary said. Javid Dehghan Khalad was put to death early in the morning in the restive southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, Mizan Online reported. It comes a day after the United Nations appealed to Iran not to go ahead with the execution of the 31-year-old. Mizan said Dehghan was arrested in June 2015 and later convicted of being one of the leaders of a “terrorist” group linked to the militant Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice). Also known as Mohammad Omar, he had been found guilty of carrying out “armed action against the state”, the website said. Dehghan was found to have been involved in the killing of two Revolutionary Guards’ members in 2015, as well as leading a raid aiming to abduct five border guards, one of whom was killed, it added. The UN had on Friday urged Iran to halt the execution as it criticised the Islamic republic for a spate of recent hangings.

PPP to reject bill on open ballot in Senate polls: leader

ISLAMABAD: Even before discussing the matter in the party’s Central Executive Committee and four days before a meeting of the heads of the 10-party opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) vice president Sherry Rehman declared on Saturday that her party would “reject” the government-proposed constitution amendment bill for open balloting in Senate elections when it would be put to vote in the upper house, where the opposition has a majority. In a statement, Ms Rehman questioned the government’s move to bring the constitution amendment bill in the parliament at a time when the Supreme Court is hearing a presidential reference on the issue. “The bill is being moved with a mala fide intention and in haste,” said Ms Rehman, who is also the parliamentary leader of the PPP in the Senate. “Why is the government bringing the bill (before the parliament) even before a decision by the Supreme Court?” she asked. Mainstream parties plan power shows in AJK on Feb 5

ISLAMABAD: As the election year has begun in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), the opposition’s Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) have decided to stage their shows of power in the valley at two different venues on Feb 5 when Kashmir Solidarity Day will be observed. As the 10-party PDM has already finalised its plan to hold a public meeting in AJK capital Muzaffarabad, the PTI said on Saturday that Prime Minister Imran Khan would address a public gathering in Kotli the same day. Talking to Dawn , a PTI spokesman said the party’s secretary general Aamer Mehmood Kiani had been directed to visit Kotli on Sunday (today) to finalise arrangements for the public meeting for which the party had already given the task to the president of the PTI’s AJK chapter Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry. The barrister has been busy for the past few days in causing defections in the AJK chapters of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-

Federal govt to join review proceedings in Pearl case

ISLAMABAD: The federal government intends to join the review proceedings initiated by the Sindh government against the acquittal of the accused ordered by the Supreme Court in the murder case of US journalist Daniel Pearl. A spokesman for the Attorney General Office on Saturday announced that it would be filing an application with the Supreme Court seeking permission to join as a party the proceedings before the top court to seek review and recall of its Jan 28, 2021 Supreme Court judgement of acquitting Ahmed Omer Saeed Sheikh — believed to be the mastermind of the murder of Mr Pearl — and the co-accused. By a majority of two to one, the Supreme Court had ordered release of Sheikh and the co-accused by extending the benefit of the doubt if they are not wanted in any other case. Immediately after the pronouncement of the judgement, the parents of the slain journalist, namely Ruth Pearl and Judea Pearl, termed the order “travesty of justice” and said the release of the alleged kille

Police officer shot dead in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A police officer was killed and two other persons were injured when assailants opened fire on them near the Central Jail on Saturday evening, police said. A police spokesperson identified the martyred policeman as Inspector Khushdil Khan of the Counter Terrorism Department. He said that the injured persons were rushed to hospital after the incident. SP Mohammad Tahir told Dawn that the incident was being investigated and it was not immediately clear who the attackers were. Peshawar CCPO Abbas Ahsan told reporters that the policeman was on intelligence duty when he came under attack near the prison. “When the cop along with some persons reached near the jail in a vehicle, they came under attack,” he said. “There were two attackers and one of them opened fire with an AK47 and the other with a pistol,” he said. He added that it would be premature to say anything about the motive for the attack. Published in Dawn, January 31st, 2021 from The Dawn News - Home https://if

Myanmar army plays down coup rhetoric

YANGON: Myanmar’s military on Saturday vowed to abide by the country’s constitution, in an apparent backtracking after its commander-in-chief spurred fears of a coup when he suggested the charter could be repealed. The army has for weeks alleged widespread irregularities in November’s election, won in a landslide by Aung San Suu Kyi’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD). Tensions were ramped up on Tuesday when a military spokesman refused to rule out the possibility of a coup. A day later, army chief General Min Aung Hlaing — arguably the most powerful person in Myanmar — said revoking the 2008 junta-scripted constitution could be “necessary” under certain circumstances. His comments — translated into English and published in the army-run Myawady newspaper — sent shockwaves through the nascent democracy, which is only a decade out of the grips of a 49-year military dictatorship. On Saturday the army released a statement claiming its commander-in-chief had been misunderstood,

Revenue collection exceeds 7-month target at Rs2.57tr

Image
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collection in the first seven months (July-January) of the current fiscal year stood at Rs2.570 trillion, surpassing the projected Rs2.550tr target by Rs20 billion, shows provisional data released on Saturday. However, the revenue collection increased by 6.4 per cent year-on-year when compared to Rs2.416tr during the same period last year. While preparing the budget for 2020-21, the government had assured the International Monetary Fund of raising Rs4.963tr as against Rs3.989tr collected in FY20 — a projected increase of 24.4pc. FBR Chairman Javed Ghani said the improved revenue performance is a reflection of growing economic activities despite facing the challenge of the second wave of Covid-19. Going forward, he said, it is expected that this revenue performance would be further strengthened as economic recovery gains more momentum. On a monthly basis, the net collection in January was Rs364bn against a target of Rs340bn, surpassi
