British PM weds fiancée in ‘secret’ ceremony

LONDON: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds married over the weekend, his office confirmed on Sunday, in what media reports have described as a “secret ceremony”. He is only the second British prime minister to marry while in power, and the first in nearly two centuries. The last was Robert Jenkinson in 1822. “The prime minister and Ms Symonds were married yesterday afternoon in a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral,” a Downing Street spokesman said. “The couple will celebrate their wedding with family and friends next summer.” Known for his colourful love life, 56-year-old Johnson wed Symonds, 33, in front of close friends and family, the Mail on Sunday and The Sun newspapers first reported. The weekend nuptials were a surprise development, after reports earlier this week said the couple had sent out “save the date” cards for a wedding on July 30 next year. Johnson is the second premier to marry in office The pair got engaged in December

Pakistan, Iraq to enhance security, defence cooperation

BAGHDAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Iraq’s Minister for Interior Othman Ali Farhood Moshir Al Ghanimi on Sunday agreed on the need for exchanging delegations with a view to enhancing cooperation in security matters, countering narcotics smuggling and visa facilitation. During a meeting, Mr Qureshi highlighted the professional expertise and commitment of Pakistan’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies in effectively dealing with the challenge of terrorism. He said the two countries could benefit from cooperation in countering terrorism, particularly sharing of expertise and intelligence and training and capacity building of their law enforcement agencies. The Iraqi interior minister welcomed the suggestion, a press release said. Foreign Minister Qureshi underscored strong religious and cultural affinities between the people of the two countries and said that these bonds also provided significant opportunities for deeper bilateral cooperation in diverse areas

Govt, opposition challenge each other’s economic statistics

ISLAMABAD: The government and the opposition on Sunday continued making claims and counter-claims regarding the country’s prevailing economic situation with both challenging each others’ statistics ahead of the presentation of the federal budget next month. When federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry through a series of tweets targeted the opposition for calling protest demonstrations at a time when the country’s economy was booming, the main opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) challenged the government to issue a comparison of economic indicators for the year 2018 when the PML-N ended its term with the present indicators after the three-year rule of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government. Meanwhile, PML-N president and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday presided over a “virtual session” of the party’s Economic Advisory Council in which he directed the party members to “expose the government’s dism

Kuwait agrees to lift bar on visas for Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD: After a decade-long suspension, Kuwait on Sunday decided to resume granting visas to Pakistani families and businessmen. The Kuwaiti government took the decision during a meeting between Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah and Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed in Kuwait City. During the meeting it was also decided that Kuwait would issue technical visas for Pakistani workers in medical and oil fields. The interior minister, who is on an official visit to Kuwait, handed over a special letter of Prime Minister Imran Khan to his Kuwaiti counterpart. Following the meeting, the ministry of interior issued a press release which said that Kuwait had decided immediate restoration of family and business visas for Pakistanis. It said that Pakistani workers would also get Kuwait’s visas according to the agreement. Gulf state stopped issuing visas to Pakistanis a decade ago The statement said that the meeting, which was also attended by Kuwaiti Inter

Govt mulls over proposal to unbundle K-Electric

ISLAMABAD: The government is considering unbundling K-Electric into separate generation, transmission and distribution companies instead of transferring it as a single entity to some other large foreign firm. The new policy consideration has officially come to the fore after recent spar between Karachi-based trade bodies led by the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and K-Electric over reported poor power supply in the country’s largest city. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Power & Petroleum Tabish Gauhar has confirmed in writing that the government supported recommendation of various industrial associations to “unbundle KE into separate generation, transmission, and more than one distribution company as opposed to handing over its management to yet another single buyer of an integrated utility company”. PM’s aide terms privatisation of integrated, monopolised power provider to Karachi a ‘policy mistake’ This meant “an unbundled

In a first, Rs4.143tr revenue collected in 11 months

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s top tax machinery on Saturday claimed to have crossed Rs4.143 trillion in 11 months of the current fiscal year against Rs3.536tr collected over the corresponding months of last year indicating a revival of economic activities in the country. More revenue ranging between Rs15bn and Rs20bn will come into the government kitty in the last two days (May 30-31) of the current month, which will further improve the overall revenue collection in the July-May period of the current fiscal year. Soon after the revenue collection data was shared with Prime Minister Imran Khan, the premier took to Twitter commending the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for crossing a ‘historic milestone’ by collecting more than Rs4 trillion in taxes for the first time in any fiscal year. PM commends FBR for crossing historic milestone Mr Khan said the revenue collection was over 18pc higher during this July-May 2021 than the previous year. Such performance reflected the broad-based economic

ISI ‘totally disassociates’ itself from attack on journalist

ISLAMABAD: The country’s premier spy agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has “totally disassociated” itself from the recent attack on a journalist and YouTuber Asad Ali Toor in Islamabad, says a handout issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday. The statement said that a “high level contact” was established between the ministry and the ISI over the incident in which a digital media journalist was “allegedly attacked” in Islamabad and the ISI had stated that it had nothing to do with the incident. “Such continued allegations against ISI show that the ISI is being a target of the fifth generation war under an organised conspiracy,” said the statement, issued a day after the journalist organisations held protest demonstrations against the growing incidents of attacks on journalists. “The ISI believes that when the alleged attackers can clearly be identified in the CCTV footages then investigation should proceed against them and stern action should be ta

PM Imran visits NCA, reposes trust in Pakistan’s nuclear capability

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday visited a nuclear facility managed by Army’s Strategic Forces Command, according to a statement issued by the PM’s Office. The visit, although a day after the observance of the 23rd anniversary of the 1998 nuclear tests, appeared to be linked to that occasion. This was Mr Khan’s first visit to any nuclear site since he became the prime minister. He hasn’t chaired any meeting of the National Command Authority so far. The prime minister is the chairman of the NCA, which is the apex decision-making body for nuclear matters. According to the statement, Mr Khan was during the visit given a briefing on “various facets” of Pakistan’s strategic programme. “The prime minister appreciated and acknowledged the untiring efforts of all the scientists and personnel associated with Pakistan’s Strategic Programme and expressed full confidence in the country’s nuclear capability and protection to strengthen the national defence,” according to the sta

In budget, Biden administration seeks economic support for Pakistan

WASHINGTON: In its first budget, for fiscal year 2022, the Biden administration also seeks money for providing economic and social support to Pakistan and for training Pakistani military personnel. On Friday, President Joe Biden unveiled the largest US budget in history — seeking $6 trillion for fiscal 2022. The budget calls for a 16 per cent increase in non-defence spending, mainly in social programmes and infrastructure projects. The overall defence budget request of $715 billion — indicates a decline of about 3pc in real terms from the current year as Afghanistan, Iraq drawdowns cut $3.2bn from the US Army costs. Congress told funding for Pakistan will support governance and tackle extremism The budget still asks for $3.3bn in operational support to sustain the Afghanistan Security Forces, a 9.2pc increase from 2021. The US State Department’s budget proposals for foreign operations and related programmes also include requests for Pakistan. “Funding for Pakistan will support

FM explores avenues of bilateral cooperation with Iraq

BAGHDAD: Pakistan and Iraq on Saturday deliberated upon the possibilities of bilateral cooperation in multiple fields, including trade, commerce, agriculture, education and security. The bilateral ties were discussed during a meeting between Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein during the former’s three-day visit to Iraq. After the meeting, both foreign ministers addressed a joint press stakeout wherein Mr Qureshi said both the sides discussed export of manpower and infrastructure development, besides other matters. He said Pakistan supported Iraq’s security and sovereignty and acknowledged its sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. The foreign minister also appreciated the efforts by Iraqi government to cope with different challenges, including Covid-19. Water shortages worsen for Punjab, Sindh

ISLAMABAD: The water shortages for Sindh and Punjab went up to 32 per cent on Friday as river flows continued to drop and storages at both Mangla and Tarbela dams neared dead level. The Indus River System Authority (Irsa) said it reviewed the overall water situation on Friday and decided to apply 32pc shortages to the two larger provinces instead of 23pc shortage at present. The water regulator said the positive development was that temperature in Indus catchments had started to go up and was reported at 26.1 degree Celsius from 23.9pc a day earlier. The Pakistan Meteorological Department informed Irsa that temperatures were anticipated to increase and the river flows were expected to improve in the next 48-72 hours owing to snow melting. However, given the existing limited storage available in reservoirs and tumbling river flows, “it was inevitable to apply further cut on provincial shares,” Irsa spokesman Khalid Idrees Rana said. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan would remain exe

Reckless Indian attitude makes region more dangerous: adviser

ISLAMABAD: An adviser to Strategic Plans Division on Friday said the region was lot more dangerous and unstable than before because of Indian leadership’s reckless attitude. Khalid Banuri, while speaking at a webinar on ‘Pakistan’s nuclear capability: guarantor of peace in South Asia options’ hosted by the Strategic Vision Institute (SVI) said India not only brought nuclear weapons to the region but was now also exponentially expanding its arsenal. The event was held in connection with the 23rd anniversary of 1998 nuclear tests. Pakistan, Mr Banuri added, was a reluctant entrant to the nuclear weapons club and it did so for the sake of restoring regional strategic stability. India, he said, did not subsequently show a responsible behaviour making the hard earned equilibrium tenuous. Referring to recent developments in India, he said the Modi government through its reckless anti-Muslim and anti-Pakistan rhetoric had limited its own options if it were at any stage to think of peace.

US envoy, Bajwa discuss post-withdrawal Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: United States envoy Angela Aggeler on Friday met Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa to continue bilateral discussions on post-withdrawal Afghanistan and the peace process. “During the meeting, matters of mutual interest, overall regional security situation, including recent developments in Afghan peace process, and bilateral cooperation in various fields were discussed,” Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. The meeting between the US chargé d’affaires and the army chief was part of the ongoing engagement between the two countries on Afghanistan. Several high-level contacts have taken place between the two sides in the past fortnight starting with a telephone conversation between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Later, national security advisers of the two countries met in Geneva and the US defence secretary spoke with the army chief over the phone. Moreover, several unannounced contacts have also report

Civic authorities in a fix as fires continue to ravage Margallas

ISLAMABAD: Fire incidents are constantly taking place in Margalla Hills as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) have failed to prevent the flames. Following an incident on Wednesday, at least three fires broke out on Friday destroying ecosystem, trees, plants and posing threat to the wildlife. Spread over 12,605 hectares, the Margalla Hills National Park witnesses large numbers of fires every year. However, the CDA and the IWMB have failed to come up with any practical step to stop the fires. “There is a need for a proper investigation to know what are the reasons behind the frequent fires though a fire could be a natural phenomenon and a result of human activity,” said an official of the CDA. He said currently the CDA environment wing regional and the IWMB were looking after Margalla Hills National Park. “There is also a need to check if there is any rivalry between these two organisations,” the official said. Official claims

Reshuffle shows budget being made by IMF: opposition

ISLAMABAD: The opposition in the Senate on Friday set a new precedence by calling into question the yet-to-be-presented federal budget for the next fiscal year. Speaking about the budget, former Senate chairman and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) stalwart Mian Raza Rabbani expressed alarm over changes in the financial team at a time when the budget was just around the corner. He said the budget is likely to be presented on June 11 and weeks before it, the finance minister had been replaced. Likewise, he added, the finance secretary had also been changed. He said that means a totally new finance team is in place. “These steps clearly indicate that budget-making exercise has not been carried out in the finance ministry. The ministry has been given a ready-made budget by the IMF,” he remarked. “This is an IMF budget and the government is just going to implement it,” Mr Rabbani alleged. No single party can dictate PDM: Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president and Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif met Pakistan Democratic Movement chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday, a day before the planned PDM meeting in a bid to keep the conglomerate intact. While Mr Sharif reportedly showed the intention that the other major opposition party Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) be also brought back into the alliance, it was agreed that the PDM meeting would take a final decision on the matter on Saturday (today). The meeting took place amid media reports that there is a rift between two PML-N groups, one being led by the party president and the other by the daughter of party’s supreme leader. Sources said Mr Shehbaz, who was accompanied by Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Sanaullah and Marriyum Aurangzeb during his visit to the residence of Maulana Fazl, also floated the idea of a grand dialogue between the government and the opposition to address basic problems confronting the country and

National Assembly extends NAB ordinance amid protest

ISLAMABAD: Amid strong protest from the opposition over an incomplete quorum, the National Assembly on Friday extended the newly amended National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Ordinance-1999 for another 120 days. The opposition claimed that NA Speaker Asad Qaiser had allowed the passage of a resolution for a second extension of the NAB Ordinance despite the absence of quorum due to which all business of the lower house of parliament should have been suspended. The issue of some private housing societies also came under discussion as lawmakers said that Jammu Kashmir Employees Housing Society, Senate Employees Housing Society and the Supreme Court Employees Housing Society had nothing to do with these institutions whose names had been used to launch these societies. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) member Shagufta Jumani said when she and many of her colleagues came to parliament in 2002, they had invested in Senate Housing Society and except a few, who got their investment refunded, the h

SC seeks Punjab reply on contempt plea in local govts case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the advocate general for Punjab on a contempt petition for not implementing its March 25 order for the restoration of local government institutions in the province, after their dissolution had been declared unconstitutional. A three-judge SC bench, headed by the chief justice of Pakistan, took up the contempt petition moved by 15 chairmen of different district councils and mayors. The apex court had ordered the Punjab governmen t more than two months ago to immediately restore the local government institutions, after declaring Section 3 of the Punjab Local Government Act (PLGA) 2019, whereby the local bodies had been dissolved, ultra vires to the Constitution. The court had further ruled that the local governments as existing in the Punjab before PLGA’s Section 3 promulgation stood restored and they should complete their term in accordance with the law. Then the court took up a petition, moved by one Asad Ali Khan through hi
